I'm so over you Bob

So last year I wrote a blog about the stacked Bob and how much I adore it, it's true I still love the cut and think it's flattering for most face shapes, but allow me to tell you about the other side of Bob... growing it out. I had a very stacked Bob done in November of 2011, the front was longer than the back etc. Well I missed doing braids, buns, curls etc. on my hair and decided it was time to grow out my short locks. It's been about 9 months now since I started growing out my hair and it has been such a process. An annoying and long process.

I rarely dislike my hair but the past few weeks I have been pinning it back everyday because I can't stand the sight of my own hair in a mirror. It's angry with me, the back is long and heavy where the stacks have begun growing out, it's massively layered and looks awkward especially because the front is unlayered. It doesn't lay right and the worst part is it won't stay straight at all, it just flips out like i'm rocking the Mary Tyler Moore cut.

This picture is IMMEDIATELY after straightening it.... FAIL

I'm working in a hair salon now and have been lucky enough to pick the brains of stylists to find out what the best way to grow out a Bob is. P.S regardless of how hard you try you will still have to go through an awkward hair length stage, however we can do a bit to make it look less terrible!

This is immediately after I got my hair colored, ps. red is totally hot right now, we will discuss this later. See how it almost looks like a mullet?

#1: Get bangs: Mixing it up a bit will help the shape of your hair look different. If you already have bangs then grow them out, it's a simple way to alter your hairstyle without cutting off the length of your hair.

#2: Even out the layers: This can take TIME to get to a point where your hair is long enough that you can even out your layers without creating a mullet. Be patient.

#3: Get rid of the corners: This is a must to changing from a bob to another hairstyle, ask your stylist to gently remove the heavy corners of the bob.

#4: Change your color: Add highlights or lowlights to help add some dimension to your tresses as they grow out.

What I did was take off the bottom layer of my hair that was flipping out. This evened out the back so as it grows out I won't have such drastic layers in the back. I had to lose some length in order to do this, but the hope is it will grow out a bit more evenly and be easier to work with.

Here is the end result, again I lost a bit of length hoping it will grow out more evenly.... No matter what it's pretty ... so that's awesome!

This is a long and annoying process, so be patient. Pin it back while you are growing it out to avoid some of the annoying flipping that occurs. Fight the urge to cut! It's hard, I almost chopped it back to the stacked bob until one of the stylists suggested just taking the weight off the back to help it lay more evenly.

I did this adorable look a lot before my recent trim.

Good Luck!

How to: Smokey Eye

Hello pretty! I created a video a while back featuring one of my go to eye shadow looks. Which is the classic smokey eye. Because of the contrast in the white- black I also call it my yin/yang look, the contrast between the two colors creates a beautiful and dramatic eye.
Check out the video below and be sure to subscribe!

Soft Cut Crease Video Tutorial

Hey there pretty! Today I have a video tutorial of a soft cut crease eye make up look. It's a look I tend to go to when I am in a rush, it's super easy and very beautiful. What I love most is how you can alter this to be as dramatic or as subtle as you like. I hope you enjoy. If you have any questions or comments leave them here!

How to: Travel as a Fashionista

Traveling can take a real toll on you emotionally and physically. It can be exhausting and draining, this past week I moved from New Hampshire to North Carolina which included a 13 hour car ride. Below are my tips for smooth travel that leave you a little less gross and a lot more relaxed.

Dress in comfortable cute clothes: As a fashionista I don't like to leave my house is less than adorable clothing but traveling is not condusive to high heels and skinny jeans. I opted for a pair of comfortable black crop pants (that are sold in the pajama section of Target!) and a lace tank top so I was adorable and comfortable. (Here is my dirty little secret... I wear these pants on a regular basis, I think they look like goucho pants, no one has ever commented on me wearing PJ's!)

Gilligan & OMalley for Target... check them out here.

The tank I wore was from Maurices it's called the "Crinkle Cami" it has a beautiful lace detail and comes in some fabulous colors! I recently bought 2 for the price of 1 at my local Maurices so be sure to check out the sales!

Because you never know what type of weather you will encounter this look is also perfect for easy layering... throw a shawl or sweater in your carry on or car and you are good to go!

Now that we have the outfit down let's move on to grooming!

FACIAL TOWELETTES: Traveling causes me to feel super icky! Stale air, a long time sitting, different weather all can take a toll on your beautiful skin. Bring with you facial towelettes, my favorite are from Yes to Cucumbers, they smell amazing and leave your skin feeling very clean and refreshed. No water or rinsing needed simply swipe and go! These beauties can be purchased at Target or other local drug stores.

MASCARA: So if you have read anything from my previous blog "Glossy Gurl" you will know how much I love mascara, it's a life saver and helps you immediately look more alert and put together. My new fav. (although it's constantly changing) is Maybelline- Volum' Express the Mega Plush. This mascara is perfect for travel because it's a gel formula so you don't get the stiff spidery legs and it's light enough you can add multiple coats or keep it to one or two for subtle lashes. Check it out here.

WATER: Drink water, you may be tired and want that redbull or third coffee but water is the most important tip I can give you while traveling. Drink it, lots of it, it will help keep your skin fresh and keep you hydrated. Also every time you have to stop to pee you can stretch a little bit which is good for your muscles!

So there you have it, my simple and super effective ways to travel! I hope everyone is enjoying your summer!

On Wednesdays We Wear Pink: Strawberry Lemonade Eye Shadow Tutorial

Hello beautiful! I've decided to pay tribute to one of my favorite chick flicks ever, "Mean Girls" by dedicating Wednesdays to the color pink. I hope you remember the infamous line "On Wednesdays we wear pink!" if not you must leave the rock you've been hiding under and go rent this movie ASAP.

To start this segment off I created a Strawberry Lemonade eye makeup look, it's very pretty and makes yellow a wearable color! I wore this out after I created the video and received a lot of compliments on it! I can get nervous about wearing bright colors out for fear of looking like a clown, but the more I venture out of my comfort zone the more I am beginning to love it! I hope you enjoy the video!

Here is a picture and a link to a Strawberry Lemonade recipe

mybakingaddiction has a great recipe here.

Colors used:

Yellow shadow (Calypso Minerals in "Bandana")
Raspberry shadow (Calypso Minerals "Razzle Dazzle")
Soft pink shadow (Calypso Minerals "Tickle Pink")

How To: Matte Polish with a sparkle pop!

Hey gorgeous! So I didn't realize it had been such a long time that I hadn't posted. Apparently my days just sorta got away from me for a bit. So sorry!

Today I was playing around with a Matte top coat and some sparkle to top it off... this is a video I made to explain the process.

I used Hard Candy "Matte-ly in love" it works very well! Hope you enjoy!

(UM THIS HAS BEEN UP FOR LIKE A WEEK AND I AM JUST NOTICING THE VIDEO ISN'T SHOWING?! I AM SO SORRY! I SWEAR I HAD IT WORKING WHEN I POSTED :( LAME)

My First Franken!

Hello gorgeous! I felt like a mad scientist today, I found myself searching through pictures of my #1 most coveted polish Essie "Starry Starry Night", if you don't know this is a VHTF (very hard to find) polish as it is a discontinued color. It can be found on ebay for $67- click here if you can afford that!

I can't so I decided to franken my first polish, if you don't know what that means... in nail polish addict language it means to create your own custom polish. This was pretty fun and very satisfying to see my new polish transform before my eyes. Below are the different polishes I used to try to recreate Essie SSN (starry starry night). Honestly it's not an exact dupe at all, my franken is much more opaque than SSN which is a blue jelly base. However I am totally impressed with my first franken attempt and love how it came out. I played around a lot to get it to the color I wanted. Also what isn't shown here is I added a royal blue eye shadow and added a nail polish thinner.

from left to right:
China Glaze- Dorothy Who?
Out The Door Top Coat
Orly- Liquid Vinyl
Essie- Bobbing for baubles
Spoiled- Silver Glitter
Jesse's Girl- Girl's Night Out

Not shown here:
Seche Vite (I used this as well as I didn't have enough Out The Door)
Blue Pigment (I used Calypso Minerals which is no longer available)

check out this site for a bunch of fab. color pigments!

My first test of the color... it's much more grey than I wanted, if I were to recreate this polish again I would skip using Essie Bobbing for Baubles... the color is a slate blue so it has a lot of grey tones. This was when I decided to add my royal blue pigment, this really changed the consistency a lot and the color totally popped. (To add the pigment I made a funnel out of paper and poured the color in. I added a nail polish thinner as it thickened up pretty quickly with the powder.

I am in lust with this color! Do you love? I am pretty impressed with my first franken!
This picture was taken with the flash on...

You want more pictures?! Well sure!

These pictures were done with no flash.

So what do ya'll think? It's not an exact dupe of Essie Starry Starry Night but it's pretty close. Click here to check out some swatches of SSN.

I've decided to name this polish "preguntale a las estrellas" which means "ask the stars".

I highly suggest doing some franken polish! It is super fun!

Check out this site for more info on creating your own custom nail polishes!

How to: Easter Nails

Hello gorgeous! Hope everyone is well today! Easter is right around the corner and today I have a pretty half moon Easter manicure to show ya'll. Of all the holidays Easter by far has the best colors, bright pinks, blues and purples with soft pastels thrown in! They're just beautiful!

These nails are really pretty simple, we're gonna do these step by step!

To begin I applied my Kiss Everlasting Nails (tutorial here) and rounded out the square to be more of a "squoval" shape. I applied a white polish using China Glaze "White on White".

Obviously you can still see the french tip underneath the nail, this will be hidden after applying the other colors.

The Colors Used:

from Left to Right:
Essie "Lapis of Luxury"
China Glaze "Sweet Hook"
Nicole by OPI "Pink Seriously"
Sally Hansen "Yellow Kitty"
NYC "Peaches 'N Cream"

Other items needed:

Reinforcement labels

I got this set of 544 for $2.79 at Rite Aid! Yay cheap nail supplies!

You can cut these in half like I did here although I find it pointless as I have so many!

Apply them to your nails like I did here, make sure all of your nails are dry so that you don't pull off the white polish.

Apply your polish and pull of the stickers quickly.

I added some glitter to the blue "egg" and some polka dots for fun.

The very pretty end result! I hope you love these little eggs as much as I do!

How to: Katniss Everdeen The Girl On Fire Nail Art

Hello Hello! I hope this finds you all well! The second part of our Hunger Games series brings us to some nail art. In the first book Katniss describes her nails as having flames on them! As the girl on fire this is very fitting for her. In this tutorial I am going to show you all my take on her gorgie fiery nails! If you haven't read the books that's totally okay, this look is fierce and bold which is something every girl deserves to feel!

I received major compliments on these! It's really hard to capture on film or in picture but the sparkle on these nails is amazing! They really do look like a burning flame on your nails! I chose to do just two fire nails because I wanted them to be wearable not costume! Have fun with this look though, change the color of the glitter or add a gradient, this look is totally customizable to be perfectly and uniquely you!

How To: Snag your dream job on a budget (Guest Post by Jackie Houston)

It's more important than ever to dress to impress when interviewing for a position. With so many people looking for a job you need to stand out! Jackie Houston is an image consultant whose stock in trade is her visionary combination of creativity and ability to brainstorm and edit — both visually and verbally. Her passion is helping clients identify, perfect and showcase their best possible image — with poise, grace and style — at all times. Her expertise includes a keen eye for design, a flair for the written word, and a gift for inspiring confidence and joie de vivre. Jackie gave up some of her best tips for dressing for an interview on a budget, read on for helpful hints!

A professional demeanor, firm handshake, and winning smile are free. Your interview wardrobe will probably cost something but it doesn’t have to cost you a fortune. These are my top five tips on how to dress for an interview on a budget:

1. Shop your closet. You may already own what you need, and you don’t need a lot. Classic pieces including a sheath dress, cardigan or tailored jacket, and trousers in neutral colors are right for most interview situations. Make sure every piece flatters and fits you perfectly. If necessary, take garments to a tailor for alterations or for upgrades like substantial new buttons to spruce up a cardigan or jacket.

2. Borrow from a friend. You might have the perfect pencil skirt, blouse, and shoes but a jacket — or trench coat or briefcase, etc. — just isn’t in your current budget. Make sure the garments you borrow fit you well and that you return borrowed items clean and in their original condition.

3. Shop consignment and discount stores. Apparel like suits, pencil skirts, structured handbags, and pumps are timeless so there’s no need to buy the latest designer versions. It’s cheaper to buy a gently used or previous season designer suit and have it updated as needed.

4. There’s no substitute for a good shoe. Shop sales and discount outlets for a pair of leather or vegan closed toe shoes in a neutral color. Consider a nude shade or a classic crocodile or snakeskin print pump. They’ll go with just about everything you own and add visual interest to your ensemble without being outrĂ©. Travel to your meeting in a pair of easy-to-stow flats to save wear and tear on your interview shoes.

5. Invest in suiting in a four season weight fabric so you can wear it comfortably at any time of year. Light heather gray, dark charcoal gray, and navy are all good choices and flatter most complexions. Black suiting is another possibility but it can be perceived as severe, especially for a first interview at a more traditional organization.

Whatever you choose to wear to your interview, make sure you feel comfortable and confident and you’ll be sure to make a strong and positive impression.

What's Hot: Hair Chalking

Trend Alert! Have you heard of hair chalking? It's one of the newest and hippest ways to instantly update your drab hairstyle and add pops of color to your tresses. It's super easy, although quite messy and creates a fun little art project for the day. As you can probably tell I have dark hair with red undertones so anyone with dark hair that thinks it won't show up.... SURPRISE it does! Below are the supplies needed for this look.

Note: this definitely dried out my hair however upon washing it out I used a heavy conditioner and let it sit for a while and it felt back to normal in no time.

Supplies:

Step 1: Take a strand of hair and wet with the spray bottle (if you have blonde hair this is optional, with dark hair it's necessary to achieve a rich colorful look)

Step 2: Take your soft pastel (color of your choice) and rub in a downward motion on the strand of wet hair. Do NOT rub up and down it will fray your hair. Some bloggers suggest twisting the strand prior to applying chalk I found this to cause a knot in my naturally curly hair. Apply as much or as little color as desired.

REPEAT STEP 1 AND 2 ON ALL OF THE CHUNKS YOU WANT TO CHALK

Step 3: Allow hair to dry

Step 4: Using a curling iron or hair straightener apply heat to the colored strands. This helps to "set the color" (please note that color will come off on your tool, use rubbing alcohol to remove)

On my dark hair I noticed the best colors that showed up were baby blue and a light pink. I played with these two colors applied the blue then applied the pink on the same strand to create a pretty purple.

You can apply color to the entire strand, I chose to stick with the middle and work my way down.

I love this because you can add some punk to your look and try something new without losing your job!

What do you think of this look? Love or hate? Would you at least try it? If you have tried it share your pictures on our facebook page or leave a comment here with your experiences!

Tip: This is super messy, wear an old T-Shirt you don't mind getting dirty and gloves are suggested! It gets everywhere!

Get a Perfect Sunkissed Glow

Hello Gorgeous! I certainly hope this gorgeous weather is doing you all well, yesterday was the first day of spring "officially" although it was 84 today in New Hampshire which really is crazy! With neons and neutrals as the current trend in nail color a golden glow is the perfect addition. Josie Maran Beautiful Bronze Kit is the perfect way to add a nice golden glow to your appearance.

What's included in the kit...

This set contains:
- 0.15 oz Argan Brightening Bronzer Sun Spot Corrector
- 0.17 oz Argan Bronzing Oil
- 0.5 oz Argan Oil Daily Moisturizer with SPF 40+
- 0.12 oz Argan Natural Volume Lip Gloss in Precious
- 0.34 oz Gogo Instant Natural Volume Argan Mascara

This line is perfect for creating a natural glow, it doesn't create a faux tan but does add a nice hint of sunkissed and glowy color. The mascara is a nice dark color that creates wonderful volume, use a lengthening mascara with it for superior results. The daily moisturizer absorbs quickly into skin and smells nicely, add a few drops of bronzing oil for the perfect light dewy glow. The powder bronzer applies and blends nicely although it's not very pigmented, really perfect for a nice hint of suntouched skin on the T-zone. The lip gloss is a nice color and feels moisturizing on lips. The bronzing oil itself is just that,an oil, it adds more shimmer than color but it's really nice to create a healthy look.

Please remember to use SPF as we are entering summer and sunnier months as a tan/ burn will inevitably age you!

How to: St. Pattys day nails!

Hello gorgeous! I'm feeling better thank goodness although not 100% yet. However I have a gorgie nail tutorial for you today! I live in New Hampshire so I'm pretty close to Boston and on Boston Saint Patrick's Day is a huge deal!! Yay Irish!!

To create polka dots: you can use several tools to create a polka dot... Toothpick, bobby pin or hair pin and you can use the tip of the brush itself by dabbing the color off the sides and have only a fine layer at the circle tip (note this will not work with the new thick brushes) so dab your light green on top of the dark green or vice versa

To create a rainbow: use a toothpick or a brush and paint color in a line into your nail ( I used one of my nail art brushes and just wiped the color off of it and dipped it in the color I wanted to use)

To create the pot of gold: I created a rounded edge similar to this ( ) and filled it in with black then used a gold polish and bobbed it on top... Very simple!

To create a shamrock: using your polka dot technique do three dots in the shape of a shamrock... Using a toothpick or bobby pin draw a stem! Super simple!!

Have fun doing your nails!!
