Knowing your hair stylist: why it's a good idea.

I got my hair done yesterday, it's my favorite act of self love. I get to leave feeling beautiful and relaxed...it's wonderful. Going to the same hairstylist is very important, I use to just walk into a salon and ask to be seen, no planning, no knowledge of what my stylists skills are. This is the reason I have had some less than excellent hair cuts and colors. It's important to know your stylists skills and to know their limits. Walking into just any salon and asking to go blond can be dangerous (think fried hair). I've been seeing my super fabulous stylist for the past year every 2 months and I am now comfortable enough to walk in and say "this is what I want... I trust you so tweak it so it fits me"... I've never left distraught or upset.  My stylist answers my questions and explains why she thinks adding red to my blond highlights is a great idea. Also you know most stylists get commission from sales of products but I totally trust my stylist when she says I should buy a certain product because there are times when she has been like "no you don't need that", pretty cool right?

Let's not forget the fact that it's like free therapy, someone getting paid to listen to you and laugh at your less than funny jokes... fabulous. So if you have been a walk-in, sit down, cut away kind of girl, try something new. Find a stylist you connect to and see what she/ he can do.

How do you find a stylist you like? See a cut/ color you really love on some stranger in the mall? Ask the person who did that fabulous cut/color... Ask for suggestions from friends. Look online for reviews, interview your stylists before you let them touch your hair. Sure it will grow back but who really wants to look like a chia pet for 3 months while that happens? I don't.
